Windows Phone 7 Now Official - Pre-order your HTC HD7 Today!

October 14, 2010 at 2:28 pm by Afzal

On Monday October 11th, Microsoft officially unveiled Windows Phone 7 (WP7), the all new Operating System that will be replacing the rather awful Windows Mobile 6.5 which was somewhat of a disaster for Microsoft. It has however been promised that WP7 will be a completely different experience to Windows of old and from what we know it doesn’t look set to dissappoint.

The most discernible difference to WP7, is it’s looks and layout. WinMo devices of old were dull, clunky and almost painful to use, but the homescreen for WP7 is clear and simple to use with designated blocks or areas of the screen corresponding to different applications or widets. The fresh look is a little bit love or hate and any die hard WinMo fans will probably hate it; but that is the exact reason neccessitating the change, WinMo fans have been converting to the little green Android in droves. That and the fact that the last decent WinMo touting handset to grace the market was the HTC HD2 way back in November last year.

So what can you expect from this new breed of Windows Phone then? Well, you’ve only got to look back through the last couple of months posts to see a deluge of ‘leaked’ Windows Phone 7 handsets from all of the major manufacturers but on release day, we were treated to an official look at the following:

The headline act if you like, is the HTC HD7, which as you can probably guess is the Windows Phone 7 touting Desire HD. The good news about the HD7, is that it’s already available to pre-order, right now. So be sure to Click Here and order yours to avoid dissapointment come the 25th October.

Following the HD7, there’s also the HTC 7 Mozart, Trophy and Pro with the Trophy being the ‘entry level’ HTC Device touting a 1GHz processor, 5 megapixel camera and a 3.8 inch screen; essentially the same specs as the current Desire, which hardly deserve the ‘entry level’ moniker. The Mozart is the phone for you if you’re looking for a bigger camera; touting an 8 megapixel camera, Dolby Mobile, SRS, 8GB internal storage and a 3.7 inch screen. Finally, the Pro is essentially the Desire Z for Windows Phone 7, touting a slide out QWERTY keyboard for die hard QWERTY fans.

From Samsung, we have the Omnia 7, touting a 4 inch Super AMOLED screen, 1GHz processor, 5 megapixel camera, and an LED flash. And finally from LG, not wanting to break the trend, we have the LG Optimus 7, with a 3.5? WVGA touchscreen, 5 megapixel camera and 16GB of internal storage.

Can Windows Phone 7 really compete with Android? Let us know in the comments below and if you haven’t already, head on over to our HD7 page and pre-order yours today!

Mozilla Seabird: The Coolest Concept Phone… Ever!

September 24, 2010 at 2:18 pm by Mark | In Mobile News

Bar none, this is without a doubt the coolest concept we’ve ever seen for a phone, watching the phone flick between it’s screens with nothing more than an effortless swipe of the IR/Bluetooth dongle, which sits flush into the back of the phone when not in use, reminds us of the computers in the Minority Report. And, that is to say, we want one and we want it now.

We’ve seen phone concepts with projectors built in before but never have we seen one that will project both a touch sensitive keyboard and the display all at once, there’s even the option to project what appears to be a full sized keyboard either side of the phone, using the phones screen as a central display. In addition to the Dual-PICO projectors, there’s an 8 megapixel camera, 3.5 mm audio jack, wireless charging and a mini-usb port. Sitting in the back of the phone is a Dongle which doubles both as a bluetooth headset and an IR control for the device.

If we’re not mistaken, the screen renderings show the Mozilla Seabird to be running on Android OS but sadly, the Seabird is said to be nothing more than a concept at the moment but given the Android renderings, we’d have money on there being a little more to this story yet. In the meantime, check out the video below and let us know what you think in the comments section below.

HTCSense.com Now Live!

October 7, 2010 at 2:36 pm by Mark | In Coming Soon Handsets, Mobile News, Mobile Phones, New Mobile Phones

You may remember, back when we brought you the details of the officially announced HTC Desire HD and Desire Z, that we also detailed a brand new online support service which would join the two new handsets; HTCSense.com. Well, this service is now live, albeit a little prematurely considering the two handsets are still only available on Pre-order.

What will HTCSense.com allow you to do? Well, here’s a full breakdown:

- Find My Phone - Does exactly what it says on the tin. If you’ve misplaced your phone, you can get it to play a loud ringer, even if it’s set to silent, in order to help you find it. It will also allow you to pin point the location of your phone on a map using GPS, lock your phone, forward calls/texts, send a retrieval message and to erase the contents of your phone should the worst come to worst.

- SMS Storage - Again, quite self explanatory, but HTCSense.com will allow you to back-up all of your text messages, re-load them onto another device and also to send/recive text messages from your desktop.

- Contact Manager - Which will back-up and synchronise your contacts, as well as editing information and adding photos. An essential piece of functionality for anyone considering switching phones.

- Navigation and Footprints - allows your computer to acces your phones GPS functionality to find saved locations on Google Maps.

- App Store - HTC will provide a a list of tested and reviewed applications, making your decisions easier and will also let you share these with friends.

So far, if you haven’t already got your order in for a Desire HD or Desire Z, be sure to head on over and do it now, to avoid dissappointment when these handsets finally land!

Two New iPhones On The Horizon? Not likely…

October 7, 2010 at 10:28 am by Mark | In Just For Fun, Mobile News, Mobile Phones

According to an analyst from the Kaufman Brothers, Shaw Wu, Apple are reportedly working on two versions of a new iPhone; the information is said to come from a contact within Apples iPhone supply chain. It has been said that Apple will produce another “perfectly sized” (Steve Jobs words, not ours) 3.5 inch screen device as well as an entry level smaller device. We can almost categorically say that this will not happen, the words entry level and Apple are words which have never been seen before in the same sentence. And if Apple CEO Steve Jobs has his way, they never will.

Apple simply do not want to operate in an entry-level market, their entire product offering is made up of high margin, aspirational products. A move into entry level offerings by Apple would completely undermine the brand image that has been built over the years, in the same way that Ferrari’s would, if they were to start selling cheap family hatchbacks. It’s just not going to happen. What do you think? Does the increasing threat from Android neccessitate a more diverse smartphone offering, or should Apple continue in their age old fashion? Let us know in the comments below.

Video Calling With Gingerbread?

October 14, 2010 at 2:00 pm by Mark | In Mobile Content/Services, Mobile News

No, we haven’t gone completely nuts, we mean Android 3.0 Gingerbread. If the latest rumours are to be believed, the next version of the little green robots software will bring with it the ability to partake in a spot of video calling or FaceTime if you prefer the Apple terminology.

The rumour stems from a quote from Google head honcho Andy Rubin, quoted saying: “We support video chat today, with Google Talk Video. It works on the desktop. Whether that can be re-purposed and made appropriate for sipping bandwidth for mobile, it’s an exercise that’s underway”.

The admission that Google are working on the technology alone is proof enough for some, especially given that some of the higher end Android Devices (like the Galaxy S’s of this world) are already being produced with front facing cameras and will almost certainly be first in line for an update to the big 3.0. The rumour seems to be reinforced by a comment from a “Tegra 2 hardware partner” that Android 3.0 Gingerbread will “change the way we use our phones.” A bold statement that we hope will be proved true when finally released.

Can’t wait that long? Well then why not take a look at our current Android Phones and jump on the Android bandwagon now. (Source: PocketLint)

HTC: Quietly Loaded

October 6, 2010 at 3:46 pm by Mark | In Mobile News

HTC have just revealed their 2010 Q3 profits, and we knew that we’d be expecting to see a rather large number given their recent domination of the Smartphone market. We didn’t quite however, expect as bigger a number as $360 million or around £225 million to put it in real money, that’s proft remember; revenue came in at an astonishing $2.45 billion (over £1.5 billion.)

To give some perspective on HTC’s achiecvement so far in 2010, in Q3 2009, profits were $184 million dollars; meaning that profits have almost doubled compared with last year. The even better news for HTC, is that the momentum created in the Android Smartphone market by the awesome HTC Desire here in the UK, appears to be continuing to grow thanks to the up and coming HTC Desire HD, which might just give the original Desire a run for its money if early interest is anything to go by. This, coupled with the imminent launch of Windows Phone 7, which HTC are rumoured to be quite heavily involved in and the fast approaching Christmas period, is sure to see HTC’s Q4 profits rise again. Want to jump on the HTC bandwagon? Well, click here to take a look at the best HTC deals around. (Source: Reuters via Engadget)

BlackBerry Playbook

September 29, 2010 at 11:12 am by Mark | In Tablets

We questioned the recent efforts of BlackBerry and it’s recent handsets for their lack of innovation and advancement, as they appeared to be nothing more than slightly jazzed up versions of their predecessors. Don’t get us wrong, the new Curve 3G is an awesome phone, but it’s near on identical looks to the old Curve left us wanting a little more excitement, fireworks and fanfare. What BlackBerry have responded with, certainly doesn’t disappoint.

This is the BlackBerry Playbook, a 7inch tablet running a brand new BlackBerry Tablet OS created in conjunction with recent acquisition, QNX Software; the makers of one of the most reliable and robust operating systems available today (according to the RIM press release). What we’re looking at here then, looks set to redeem all of the BlackBerry Smartphone range short comings, since it would seem that all efforts have been focussed on this.

What do we know about the Playbook? Well, it’ll be a 7 inch tablet, (putting in the firing line of the mighty Galaxy Tab) sporting an LCD panel with a 1024 x 600 resolution as well as full multi-touch and gesture support. There’s also a 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, Dual HD cameras (3 megapixel front facing and 5 megapixel rear facing) with support for 1080p HD Video recording (and yes, you read that right, 1080p!) There’s also an HDMI out for watching your videos on your HD TV via MicroHDMI as well as a microUSB port. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi take care of connectivity options, although it is said that RIM plan to launch 3G and 4G versions of the Playbook in the future.

Despite the aforementioned specs, the tablet is said to be ultra thin and portable measuring up at just 130mm x 193mm x 10mm, with an overall weight of just 400g; we just hope that they have managed to squeeze a decent sized battery into the Playbook! The bad news? Well, the Playbook isn’t going to be available until early 2011 for our US cousins with a launch here in the UK looking more likely to be in Q2. Keep an eye on the blog for more details as they emerge and why not take a look at the official promo-video below in the meantime. (Source: BlackBerry via GSMArena)
